The word “renew” means to make new, to make effective for an additional period and to begin again. As it says in Romans 12:2: “And be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” I have always looked at that Bible verse in a spiritual context, when in fact, it not only applies to our lives spiritually, it also applies naturally! Me, being the “dieter of all dieters,” one who has tried every diet and failed to the point of gaining back an extra 1o pounds, finally realized that I could no longer just put anything in my body and expect my body to function properly. Just as I have chosen to guard my mind and heart from things that could damage my thinking, I now guard my body from ingesting foods that can damage me inside and shorten my life expectancy. My mind and the way I think about food have brought me to the point of daily renewal. Every morning when I get up I say, “I made it through yesterday, let me begin again today.” It’s a continual process, a renewing of the mind consistently. I had to do a complete paradigm shift within my mind literally speak to my body and tell it, “Body, my mind wants you to be whole and healthy, and to do it, we must change our lifestyle, together.” I have now chosen to review (there goes that “re” again) my thoughts now before acting on them and feeling depressed later as I did before. No more satisfying my sweet tooth with a late night dash to the local 24-hour restaurant ordering a hot apple pie a la mode with all the trimmings. No more running to the local family-owned restaurant and ordering a 10-piece fried chicken meal saying to myself, “I’ll only eat two and give the rest away.” (Using the excuse that we must support local businesses!) What has helped me is to respond to my own thoughts before I react on them. Just like spiritually, there are many things before I gave my life to Christ that I would do that didn’t add to my life, but rather left me feeling drained, depressed, lonely and sad. There were friendships that actually depleted my energy and vigor as well, that didn’t add value to me nor help make me better in any way causing me to remove myself from them. This is how I now make food choices. Will this food add value to me? That value means, energy, vigor, a longer life, vitality, strength or fat loss. If I can’t answer yes then I don’t ingest! Both of my children have joined this quest with me in order to help me with my accountability, reminding me daily of how proud they are to have a mother who makes decisions and sticks to them! I haven’t made it yet, but I am well on my way! In the photo above, I’ve already shed five pounds. Let’s go!
