Pastors Moment: There is something about impromptu - TopicsExpress

Pastors Moment: There is something about impromptu guests. Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, May you never bear fruit again! Immediately the tree withered. When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. How did the fig tree wither so quickly? they asked. Matthew 21:18-20 Have you ever gotten a guest at a time that you were not expecting anyone? I have on several occasions and my wife bears all the pressure of trying to make the house look presentable. Maybe the living room is all messed up with stuff scattered all over the place. Or you probably had a meal and you were feeling a bit lazy so all the dirty utensils are still on the dining table and then someone knocks on the door. Do you tidy up the place first or do you let them in? Now if you ask me, the tree got a visitor it was not expecting. The fig tree represents a good number of us. It looked good, the leaves were green and it looked like a really healthy tree. A fig tree with leaves was a fig tree with fruit. The two appeared together, but for this particular tree, this was not the case. Jesus walked up to it because with its leaves, the tree was declaring that it had fruit. Jesus was disappointed the tree had no fruit! Without the fruit, the tree did not have the power to reproduce itself because the seed is in the fruit. It looked good to the eye but it was of no value to the master. It was proclaiming life yet it was barren. Are you like the fig tree? Do you look good to the masses but you bear no fruit? Are you the kind of Christian who has a form of godliness but no power of God is flowing through you because in reality you have no fellowship with Him? Are you barren spiritually? Are you proclaiming a lie declaring life yet you bear no fruit? We live in a generation where we are so concerned about appearances and what others will think about us and so we go to all lengths to impress people and not God. Many of us will do anything for the approval of men. Jesus told us that we would know the false prophets by their fruits. We are called to be ready in season and out of season. Yes you may look good, yes people may sing praises about you, yes you may look green and fresh and it may seem like all is well but the big question remains will Jesus find fruit when He comes? Remember He will come like a thief in the night, at a time when you least expect Him. My prayer is that He finds me ready! Always be ready at all times, the savior may knock on your door today!
