Pathways to Reading Question & Answer: “What can I do to help - TopicsExpress

Pathways to Reading Question & Answer: “What can I do to help a student who has trouble blending sounds to read words?” An underlying issue to check: 1) blending is the flip side of segmenting. If a student correctly segments each sound: /d/, /o/, /g/- but then says the word as: dig, got dock, drog, etc. chances are that the foundational segmenting skills developed in segment and write are not fluent and accurate. Assess and Assist Tip: Segmenting is often the underlying weakness in blending issues. Using your small group observation notes, determine which students in the group have more difficulty segmenting. Check if your student with blending difficulties is one of these students. Always call on the students who are weaker at segmenting to be the first sound leader. Use the Flip and Assist and the Arrow to fully respond to segmenting errors. Check the words in your lesson plans. Be sure you are choosing words with 4 and 5 sounds.
