Patricias post about Hey Ya! reminded me of this, for some reason. The article only touches on it, but this was the first ~100% IBM compatible PC. They reverse engineered the BIOS by having two teams of engineers work on it. One looked at the code for the BIOS and took detailed notes without writing any of the code down, and the other took those notes and reconstructed it. And it worked! Really, really well! IBM tried to sue, but their method was actually totally bulletproof. On top of that, their version of the code was actually significantly smaller than IBMs. Cool shit! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compaq_Portable Side note, the first computer I ever used was a Compaq Portable II. Green phosphor screen, 10 MB HDD and a 5 inch floppy drive. Oh yes.
