They reverse engineered the BIOS by having two teams of engineers work on it. One looked at the code for the BIOS and took detailed notes without writing any of the code down, and the other took those notes and reconstructed it. And it worked! Really, really well! IBM tried to sue, but their method was actually totally bulletproof.
