Patrisha, who has cerebral palsy which affects her legs, was having trouble getting in and out of the family car. Nimfa, her mum, could manage the transfer when Patrisha was younger but was beginning to find lifting her difficult and started to experience back problems. An option was to purchase a hoist to assist her transfer but Patrisha, her family and her therapist were looking for an easier, more discreet option. TAD Volunteer Tom Yelland designed and built a platform and rail made from light-weight timber with a marine ply surface, a stainless steel tube and rubber feet. The platform is the same height as the foot rests on the wheelchair. The railing is removable, a similar height to the bottom of the car door’s window and runs parallel to the open door. The platform is light enough for Nimfa to store in the boot and, with input from Patrisha’s therapist, it was decided to make the platform a triangular shape to be smaller for easier transportation. TAD Volunteers and therapy team work with the client, their family and therapist to design custom equipment that helps the client achieve their goals, while being mindful of practical aspects like storage and transportation and the look and feel of the item.
