Paul Carafotes (Harold Dyer) Knots Landing Q&A Q: how did you get the role of Harold Dyer! A: I got the role through an audition, the usual way. What was unusual were the circumstances on the day that surrounded it. I was waiting with all the other actors for my turn and an older gentlemen decided to light a cigar in the waiting room. I had just quit smoking and took offence to this and said so, which he didnt like. We were in a pretty heated debate when I heard my name called to go in and read. Well I was hot and angry so I used it in the audition. They loved it and wham I had the job. Q: were you cast to be Olivias husband or did that develop later, once you had established the role? A: I was originally cast to play Mannys side kick or henchman. I dont think they knew what was going to happen because I was hired to do just 2 episodes and it grew from there. Q: did you like your character? A: Loved my character. I didnt feel any fear when I began. I had only done a little TV at the time. Mostly I was doing roles in films, so I came with an attitude that I was going to do what I wanted and try to have as much fun as I could. That attitude worked for me, they saw something that excited them and the writers started writing for me. Plus I visited the writers room quite often. Charm had a little something to do with it as well, looking back on the experience now. Q: did you enjoy working on the show? A: Loved it. Loved the cast. A great group of people, not to mention very talented actors. I was lucky to have had that opportunity. It was fun. Q: who was your favourite cast member & why? A: I loved working with Kevin Dobson. He was open to any ideas within the scene that I brought. He was pretty cool and from NY and he liked me. I made him laugh and I felt like he was into what I was doing as an actor. He was also a big star on the show, so when we changed any of the scenes I didnt get in any trouble Kevin protected me. Kevin was also responsible for my becoming a series regular. He let me try so many things. How it happened was the kidnapping scene where I (Harold) had him tied up and Im eating an apple and throw it at him. That was my idea but he allowed me to do it. Very generous actor Kevin is. That was a powerful scene and the producers were knocked out by it and gave me a contract. It was Kevin really. generous man and actor. Q: how did you benefit from being on the show? A: I benefitted by all the things that happen when you come on a very successful tv show. Money, fame, girls. doors open. you get the buzz from all of it. I had no idea what Knots Landing was before I came on the show. The power of television opened my eyes, it was incredible. Not to mention a bit of respect because the work was good. Q: would you consider going back if Knots Landing returned (like Dallas)? A: would I consider going back on the show? YES!! Q. What have you been doing since leaving Knots Landing? A: Ive been very busy writing. I have directed a few projects of my own. I made a film called CLUB SODA which is autobiographical of my early days in NY. starring Joe Mantegna, Lou Gossett Jr., Michael Risspoli. I discovered the young Steve McQueen (Steve McQueens grandson) to play me, not a bad choice... and my very dear friend the late, James Gandolfini. Mostly Ive been raising my son Charlie who has inspired a children book series that Ive written, called The Adventures Of Charlie Bubbles! We have 3 books out now. Charlie chose the story of the latest one, Charlie Bubbles To Fenway, and a few of the illustrations in the book. Charlie Bubbles 2 Smartsville pays homage to my life long love of the Beatles... its an epic tale for children. Ive just finished a feature film called Days Full of Nights where I play a bit of a scoundrel detective, that should be good. Looking forward to watching my son grow and doing the best I can at being involved in his life. Thats how the books came about, he inspired me and now we are working together. Its confidence building and fills him with self-esteem. thats my job really. Im a dad and I write childrens books about my relationship with my son. CharlieBubblesFaceBook CharlieBubblesBook
