Paul Dukas, whose birthday is today, wrote a fair amount of music - TopicsExpress

Paul Dukas, whose birthday is today, wrote a fair amount of music which we will never hear, because he burnt most of it just before he died. Known as a perfectionist, he allowed only a few of his compositions to be published, which luckily include this, all time favorite of mine. According to one account, we have Maurice Ravel to thank for essentially daring Dukas to publish The Sorcerers Apprentice, and I am forever grateful. Now, take a minute or 10 to forget about Micky Mouse and really listen to this music. Among other things, I say that this piece contains the most realistic depiction of a magical incantation in all of classical music. Also, it is seriously creepy. Really. https://youtube/watch?v=cRYP2JLKcoU
