Paul Perez, Harry Young Indy Sheldon, and many others just as special - and all desperados in a sense .. Early 70s - I was working my way through various elect college courses. Mostly social services and criminal justice, at night I would bounce and stand security at The World Famous Palomino Club in North Las Vegas.. The owner Paul Perry had a niece I discovered was Karen Carpenter. She loved the club in Vegas.. ! lol.., But, her beloved brother was a hound for the stage girls. One of my mentors and best pal [Bill Richardson] advised me Karen was trouble and to stay way back from her.. Paul Perry and his wife Gail however, knew that Karen would be never more secure than being with me, I was a protective SOB.. so one night when big brothers perk was lapping at the girls on Pauls stage all night, Paul tossed me the keys to his Limo and told me to take Karen away and essentially make sure she got back to their suite safe and sound. OK, Will do! We went to the California Club downtown and she changed into casual clothes, then we discussed places to go, my suggestion was the Mountain.. Mount Charleston and the fire pit tavern. Um, she said Lets go ! So off I went, Karen in the back of the powder blue Limo. One hour later, we arrived, Karens big eyes peeked open from under her jacket and we both kinda stumbled into the tavern at the top of the mountain with a tad of altitude high. I took my normal place at the bar, Karen went dead on to the piano..About 9 or 10 folks in there - a blazing nice warm fire - and the evening began to roar for all of us.. She sang, she danced she pulled all of us together for hours into the late evening and morning. I finally called Paul at the Palomino Club and asked him what I should do with her, she didnt want to leave.~~ SCORNED!! Take her back to the HOTEL!!.. Make sure she is safe!! DAMNIT.. Grunt, I had to.. I Keyed up some silly love song on the juke box and I pulled her off the piano, drunkin and high, into my arms and danced her out of the tavern and into the Limo quite willingly..! *Exhale* *Sigh* Safe! Driving back down the hill to Vegas she began composing a song we all know later called Desperado. Little did I know or understand, this beautiful child WAS the Desperado.. 1973? ,Good night Karen.. -and- Thank you! :)
