"Paul now includes a thanksgiving (1:3–8) and a prayer - TopicsExpress

"Paul now includes a thanksgiving (1:3–8) and a prayer (1:9–14) in which he introduces some of the letter’s main themes. He thanks God for the Colossians’ faith and love that spring from a heavenly hope they received when they responded to the “word of truth, the gospel” (1:3–5). Paul assures the Colossians of their connection to this world- changing gospel- they heard it, understood it (from Epaphras), and accepted it, as demonstrated by their “love in the Spirit” (1:6–8). Now Paul prays that God will fill them with “the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding” (1:9). He prays this so that they may live a worthy life, pleasing to God (1:10). This worthy life is defined in 1:10–14:bearing fruit in good works, increasing in their knowledge of God, being strengthened with spiritual power, and joyfully giving thanks for all God has done for them. He rescued them from the domain of darkness and brought them into the kingdom of Jesus, redeemed them, forgave them, and gave them an inheritance (1:12–14). When we stop to think about what God has done for us, joyful gratitude is the only proper response." (Baker Illustrated Bible Handbook)
