Paying homage: Our story is similar to many Black families in this community. Im proud to be an example of what our babies who are growing up in poverty, exposed to violence and oppressed by racism, can be. But Im feeling some kind of way about the opportunistic and exploitive energy that presents itself when hardworking humble people are doing something positive. I will do my work to learn the lesson in that. In the mean time I continue to stand in the light and show my pride for where I come from. I thank God for my family. I was given the honor of writing the dedication for the restaurant. - Stella J’s is dedicated to our beloved mother Estella Jackson. Stella J’s is a taste of down home cooking you can’t get anywhere else. Estella Jackson dedicated her life to taking care of family. A woman of great strength and integrity, she worked hard to take care of her six children, her four nephews and many grandchildren on her own. Born and raised in Tunica, Mississippi, she endured and survived one of the most oppressive periods for black people in our nation’s history. She labored in the cotton fields, worked as a domestic for the wealthy and worked long hours as a cook in restaurants so that she could provide for her family. She always dreamed of having her own restaurant but her dreams were deferred so that her children could have the opportunities she never had. The cooking you are about to experience is the fiber that kept our family together. No matter how hard times were, we could always count on a great home cooked meal that nurtured our bodies and our souls. It was amazing what this woman could create from scratch! It was over her great meals that she taught us valuable life lessons: to work hard, be good to others and to honor God. We tasted our mother’s love in every delectable bite. Now our family is sharing the love with yours- the legacy continues with Stella J’s, a soul food experience like no other. Welcome home to Stella J’s and taste the “flavor of love”.
