Peace Officer Memorial For Merced County The Merced County Peace Officer Memorial was held today at the monument outside the County Administration building in central Merced. Loved ones, local residents, leaders and the law enforcement community paid their respects to the 16 officers who died in the line of duty and are named on the memorial. The keynote Speaker was Dr. Christine McFadden of Valley Animal Hospital who lost her entire family to violence, and had some insightful and touching words to say about how she and her loved ones were helped by the officers and deputies who put their lives on the line for each and every one of us .... every day. Survivors and loved ones of all 16 officers were present, among them Michelle Gray, wife of slain Merced Police Officer Stephan Gray, and Terry Rivera, mother of prison correctional officer Jose Rivera. Merced County Sheriff Thomas Cavallero led the proceedings. Deputy Aaron Avila sang One More Day. State Senator Anthony Cannella addressed the crowd. Gwen Amey sang Amazing Grace UC Merced Police Chief Rita Spaur read the poem To Serve And Protect. Taps was played by Bradley Spicer of Golden Valley High School.
