Peace be with You Hilltops curve to rocks and the peak is tower watch Standing next to me a friend, she was just walking by Hiked up the mountain, but not her skirt Life has so little meaning when there’s so much hurt Free from the oppressing doom of continuity Clear from the debris of shattered responsibility Nature embraces a man, me, with such impunity That I lost myself in a sea of eternity The sharp claws retracted gently Almost graceful The eagle peers into the depths of my soul Whole The side cart shrieked to a screeching halt “Protect me from the slayer! The fearsome wrath of wraiths!” Clueless to the true meaning of this encounter I stepped in front so that the wind could deliver the messenger Wingspan beyond the grit of control Fear is natural, calm naturally deposed A steady hand I dealt as I approached my primal half We greeted – man and beast – echoing an ancient past Like a darkened angel – the majestic eagle glared Eyes sharper than the claw that molds the portal stare Honorable magnificence for that moment, my life We shared a destiny in perfect, motionless skies ************************************************************************************* I had hiked to the tower in Harriman State Park in downstate New York. My girlfriend told me that I’m like a fast moving squirrel because I would hop around to the top of rock boulders and veer off the common path. I guess I did move like a squirrel. I acted frivolous. Whether I was intimate with this girl is not important. In fact, I am still not sure if I was intimate with her. She, sort of, just left. But it was on this mountain peak that we saw some cool things. We saw the colonial castle hotel embedded into the rock wall of Mohegan Lake. We took in the sights all throughout the nature path. Our conversation was friendly and jovial, but it came to a sudden halt. At the highest peak of Harriman State Park there is a watch tower made from stone. One must hike to the top of the hill and then you have to climb a set of stairs that reaches multiple stories into the sky. Once you are at the time, the wind blows you back and forth because it is the unshielded pinnacle of the entire region. We had just gotten down from the tower, after a couple of digital photos, and curled around the base when she suddenly shrieked. I took a quick step to see around the corner when I saw a giant eagle nearly 7 feet wide hovering at the crest of the hill. The eagle was using the strong mountaintop winds to hover still, the feathers of his giant wings flickering as he matched the intensity of the gusts. In an intense moment I smiled. She was funny in an innocent way. I stepped in front to greet the eagle and, within, I spoke saying, “Hi there friend.” Internally I sought to determine the eagle’s character and I felt only strong nobility and honor. He was not aiming to hurt anyone. His response was a solemn, “Hello”. He had greeted me with a respectful bow of spirit. His body floated magically for a few moments as I stared into his mesmerizing eyes. The cruelty of his brutal claws and the fury of his glare were perfectly balanced by a sense of unbreakable dignity. In a bizarre reality, with absolute certainty, the eagle not only knew who I was but also had some level of regard for me. I ask myself, still, “Why?” She was terrified of the majestic terror that soared motionless before us. I put my right hand out towards the eagle and felt heat emanating from my arm. Behind me, when I turned to check, she stood there frightened but bewildered. A mixture of respect and concurrent fear arose from her senses as I insured her safety. A moment later, the eagle flew off to the winds and we parted ways. When I saw my newfound friend veer into the vast, blue expanse I felt a freedom in my spirit as I soared away with him. As strange as this tale may seem, it’s a true story. I would like to apologize that another person was involved. It seems to sully the moment I had with my noble eagle friend. Nevertheless, I’m not sure if we would have met acquaintance if not for the third wheel.
