Pee Wee Carrasco, 1999 – 2015, a handsome Jack Russell Terrier, Recognized Smoke Jumper for the National Rodent Forestry Service (NRFS), after 26 or some say 27 successful solo jumps moved in with me, his mother, Anna, and his brother, Peanut, 9 years ago. He brought with him his many medals for bravery, courage and scent work. His sniffing abilities were internationally acclaimed. Over the last 9 years, we traveled across Mexico – through checkpoints, breakdowns, and shake downs - and he always had my back. On the beaches of Mexico he would glide down the shoreline for miles running after the birds and hike up the Sierra Madres, crossing rivers and dense jungles in search of the perfect rodent. In Texas, he would chase the deer for miles and then turn them back to their starting place. At the lake, he spent hours swimming, barking and splashing the water all at the same time. He won First Place at the Gran Perroton Dog Show in Puerto Vallarta three years in a row. Every night he slept next to me or I’d find him sleeping in my suitcase – just to be sure he traveled with me on the road. He played many rolls in my videos, the most famous roll, was eating tamales at the dining room table in ‘Tamale Christmas with The Family’ youtu.be/lnffWcxb0jM?list=PLaMh5SUvdZBZGDuuyWx8wYLgEZTLr7UyJ And, he sang backing vocals on ‘Nacho Daddy’ on my ‘Que Wow’ CD. This past week he was with me in a recording session and his spirit was with me in the music. He went everywhere with me because home is where my dogs are. There is nothing better than waking up with your best friend in a hotel room anywhere in this universe whether it’s a five star hotel in Houston, Texas or a hut in Real de Catorce, Mexico. Most of my decisions in life have been made with my dogs safety and happiness first. They inspired me to start the Viva Perros Foundation. Through the years, I’ve driven all my band mates crazy because my dogs have always gone on tour with me. Theyve seen me sneak them into countless hotels and restaurants. I never got lonely when I was with Pee Wee, Anna, and Peanut. They have always healed me!! They taught me about life!! They are my angels!! They have my heart – my soul – my love forever. A week ago, Pee Wee was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. He died at home with hospice care next to me in bed. Adios Pee Wee. I’ll meet you at the Rainbow Bridge!
