Penelope passed the swallow-function study, but with restrictions...as expected. During the swallow-function study they determine what consistency formula and nipple flow is safest for her to use and not aspirate. Penelope has a super strong suck so she ended up needing the thickest consistency formula and a slow flow nipple. What this means is that we have a safe way to start introducing bottle feeds again. Now, for her to suck the thickest consistency formula through a slow flow nipple is like drinking a smoothie through a coffee straw; its not very effective but its a safe way for her to learn the mechanics of bottle feeding properly (and not aspirate). What shes not able to consume with the bottle will be given through her NG tube (nasal gastric tube - the tube in her noseđ) Hopefully in time, with practice, and when its safest we can introduce a thinner formula and/or different nipple flow. We are one step closer to coming home! ANNND tiny Penny is 6lbs 3oz!!!
