PennDOT announced that construction will begin Monday, Nov. 3, on a $36 million project to replace the western-most Route 422 bridges over the Schuylkill River in North Coventry Township, Chester County, and West Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery County. The replacement of the deteriorating dual bridges carrying Route 422 over the Schuylkill River, which are located between the Stowe and Route 100 interchanges, is made possible by Act 89 funds, which I strongly supported. The replacement of the twin bridges, which were built in 1965, marks the second of six projects to move to construction as part of PennDOT’s multi-phase program to rebuild and improve 7 miles of Route 422 between the Berks County line and the Sanatoga Interchange. Crews will work through September 2018 to replace the six-span westbound and eastbound structures in three stages while keeping one travel lane open in each direction on Route 422 during construction. Due to Act 89, more than $2.3 billion will be invested into the state’s highway and bridge network this year, more than $800 million above what would have been available without Act 89. So far, PennDOT has started work on more than 200 Act 89 projects covering more than 1,600 miles of roads and 83 bridges. Overall, more than 900 projects are expected to get underway this year, both from Act 89 and prior funding streams.
