Pension Hero of the Week: California Attorney General, Kamala Harris AG Harris is being sued by San Jose Mayor, Chuck Reed for her title and summary for Reed’s ballot initiative, the Pension Reform Act of 2014. Reed is saying that the measure’s summary, which would appear on signature- gathering materials, uses “false, misleading words and phrases” intended to create “prejudice against the measure.” Reed’s lawsuit focuses around one sentence: “Eliminated constitutional protections for vested pension and retiree healthcare benefits for current public employees, including teachers, nurses, and peace officers, for future work performed.” Reed objects to “eliminate”, “vested” and Harris’ references to jobs. NCPERS weighed in on the case this week with our own amicus brief in support of AG Harris. NCPERS believes that Harris accurately and fairly describes Reed’s proposal. Sacramento Superior Court Judge Allen Sumner agreed and shot down Reed’s proposal. Reed is appealing the decision.
