Pentecost gospel (John 7:37-52; 8:12). The Church has purposely associated the imagery of the water/Spirit ("If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the scripture has said, Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water") and that of the light/Christ ("I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life"), to show continuity in the divine economy. But look at the power of the metaphors... Water and light, the ingredients of life. No life without water and light; no life without Christ and the Spirit. What better conclusion for the festival of the fifty days, which began with a proclamation of the Light that secures our adoption as children of God? These are "the mighty works of God" (Acts 2:1-11) that we are supposed to utter in the world.
