People are also going to try to make you feel bad about how you write, or when you write, or tell you there is only one true way to write. Do not let other writers intimidate you. There is always going to be someone more successful than you who you feel doesn’t deserve it; someone more successful than you with whom you feel you will never be able to compete; someone who is published before you; someone who is faster at writing than you; someone who can write descriptive passages in the way you want to and can’t; someone who can structure in a way you want to and can’t. Someone who seems to sweat beautiful phrases and dab them gently away with an excellent plot napkin and then go on to cheerfully have a genius milkshake while you lie prone and resentful and still on Chapter One, Page One. … Think of a book special to you, and how much bleaker and poorer your life would be if that one writer had not existed—if that one writer had not, a hundred times or a thousand, made the choice to write. You’re going to be that one writer, one day, for somebody you may never meet. Remember that nobody can write that book you’re going to write—that book that will light up and change up a life—but you.
