“People are crying out for help. We’re at a really desperate moment in South Sudan”. In an exclusive new interview, UN humanitarian official Toby Lanzer sounds the alarm about the dire situation in South Sudan, warning that the country could collapse by the end of the year if urgent action isn’t taken to help see its people through the current crisis. THE PROBLEM Recent surveys show that more than 30 per cent of people in South Sudan do not have access to safe water supplies; only 13 per cent have access to adequate sanitation facilities, making this one of the lowest service coverage statistics in the world. Only 45 per cent of South Sudan’s 3,349 basic primary schools have access to safe water and a mere 17 per cent have adequate sanitary latrines for both girls and boy. THE ISSUE The rainy season has come up fast and all the Internally Displaced Persons in the UN Camps are all at risk with high probabilities of various flooded areas damging the tents, which most call home due to the devastating humanitarian crisis currently deteriorating the youngest country possibily spilling over to bordering countries due to the recent deployment of the East African Regional Force approved by the IGAD. The fault is not in the DNA of the South Sudanese people but instead with the political leaders who galvanize ethnic support and carve out geographic and political niches of support. -Peter Greste Thank you to the generous donors that make this possible and we thank all future donors. The (E.d.R.O.S.S.) team is greatly appreciative of any contributions made for sustaining human life and being a part of a cause. Check out the full project at the link below.
