People blame animal controls for killing all these wonderful pets. - TopicsExpress

People blame animal controls for killing all these wonderful pets. Lets set the record straight. Blaming shelters for all this is not strictly accurate. What about the people who left these animals out stray? Took on a pet then just tossed it away? How about the people who turned in their pets when they were told by the shelter what would happen to those pets? Those are the people who are responsible for the deaths of these homeless pets, not the shelter employees. Imagine their fate if they were not humanely euthanized? Dying of starvation on the roads, hit by cars to suffer a lingering death, diseases, abusive psychos doing God knows what to them, fight rings using them as training bait. There are a horrendous 1000 things that can happen to these dogs . Please consider why this is actually the cause. If there is an ceaseless supply of intakes, and not enough people able or willing to adopt them, what else can you do with them? Lock them in a kennel for years? And who is willing to pay for that? Will the taxpayers in your county pay for it? No Kill is always the goal, but what happens when a No Kill shelter fills up, and they often do? Where do the next homeless pets go? Which ones are picked to go? Right. It is a zero sum game. Basic economics at its harshest. So, unless we address the source of this plight, irresponsible ownership, lack of neutering access or incentives, and high volume breeding, we should stop blaming animal shelters who are by law responsible for humanely dealing with the aftermath of peoples irresponsibility, the solution to all this tragedy will take a lot longer to come around. Blaming the people who work there just has a negative effect. First of all, responsible, sane, and ethical people will be less willing to work in an environment where they know they are going to be falsely blamed. Guess who that might leave willing to do the job? Right. There will be that tendency. Most of our volunteers on this page either work in or volunteer in Kill Shelters. We walk these pets knowing it may be their last day. We pet them and play with them knowing it could be their last day. We know that if we cant continue to foster a pet, it gets returned to the general population where it could be killed. It is a hard reality, but we do it anyway. Why in the world do you think we try so hard to get our audience on here at SEPRR to actually do more than Like or Gripe?
