Photo and historical narrative courtesy of New Britain, Connecticut, 1850-1950.” Were you a Visiting Nurse in New Britain or a Nurse at New Britain General Hospital or elsewhere in Central Connecticut? “November 10th, of the present year (1950) will mark the forty-fifth anniversary of the organization of the Visiting Nurse Association of New Britain, Inc. “ ‘To provide competent nurses to visit the homes of such persons as do not or are not able to secure the services of a resident nurse’ is its purpose, and a general idea of its activity may be gleaned from the 1949 report, which records a total of 19,254 calls by an average of seven nurses. “The present staff averages between eight and thirteen registered nurses, a nutritionist, and a large number of volunteers, guided by a Board of Directors of thirty women, and advisory committees of physicians and business men. The services of the Association are in constant demand, not alone in its home nursing program, but also in conducting classes for expectant mothers, providing room for speech therapy by the Connecticut State Department of Health, maintaining a loan closet of sick room supplies, an office treatment center for ambulatory patients, a nutrition service, and assistance to crippled children. “Mrs. Harold E. Bassett is President of the Association, and Miss Rachel Colby is Director.” Written in 1950.
