People often ask me why my bands (not necessarily my playing personally) are consistently excellent. I have for many years subscribed to a simple theory I somehow thought I invented. Turns out it was Stan Getz! I found the quote in my current trumpet mentors Roger Ingram book btw. You can read all the textbooks and listen to all the records, but you have to play with musicians that are better than you.
