People say that Boxing is a dying sport. I dont think that boxing is dying, these days there are millions of dollars involved in the sport, and it is alive and well in middle America. Each and every night, shows are put on all across the country in small venues that hold less than 1000 people, by boxing promoters. Fans young and old come out to watch two men step inside of a boxing ring to do battle, just like the Romans did, thousands of years ago. There are thousands of young fighters, here in America and around the world, who dream of becoming a World Champion, or just maybe the next Oscar De La Hoya or Manny Pacquiao, who make millions of dollars, with a little luck. But in many cases that will never happen. Most of these fighters will be lucky to make a few thousand dollars over there boxing careers. The promoters will do just fine in most cases. It is evolving each and everyday into a sport that is ran by less than stellar people in most cases, but not by all, who are involved in the sport. Dont get me wrong, there are still many good people in the sport. They are just being pushed aside by greed these days, and being slowly cut out of the picture. What other professional sport allows the participants to promote the sport and then pay all who are involved in the officiating or outcome of the winner. I see a huge conflict of interest here. That would never be allowed to happen in Baseball, Basketball or any other professional sport. So why is boxing any different. We need to revamp the sport. It is the only professional sport that is not over seen by a true boxing commission or commissioner. * There is no insurance in place for fighters. * There is no retirement plan in place. * There in no Medical Insurance in place. * There is no true pay scale for a fighter. Almost every fighter is paid below todays minimum wage, when you look at the hours put in to prepare for a fight. (Except for the marque fighters) * There in no Union to represent the fighters. Just my thoughts on a grey cloudy morning in So. Cal. on a sport that I truly love, and hate to see what has happened to in the last 20 years....
