People united to protect Grameen Bank: Prof Yunus→ Staff Correspondent Nobel Laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus has accused the government of playing electoral game with Grameen Bank. “They want to split Grameen Bank into 19 pieces. But the people of the country are united to protect the wealth of the poor,” he added. He called upon the government to shun the unrealistic idea. Muhammad Yunus said “The government is in a fix to tackle electoral politics. How do they want to play with Grameen Bank?” He was addressing a function organised to accord public reception to him on his receiving Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award of the United States. The reception was held at the Institution of Engineers Bangladesh (IEB) on Friday. Language hero Abdul Matin presided over the programme which was attended by Barrister Rafiqul Haque, Brigadier (retd) Manjur Kader and former secretary M Maniruzzaman. Major (retd) MM Mehbub Rahman read out citation. The function was moderated by member-secretary of public reception committee Mozammel Hossain Shahin. Prof Muhammad Yunus termed the attack on the bank as a matter of great regret. “It is a matter of great regret to split into 19 pieces the thing which earned laurel for the country,” he maintained. He said the government formed commission to implement its agenda on the bank. The commission has been working on the issue for long. Meanwhile, people across the country formed human chain and waged movement to protest the government’s agenda. But the commission has not suspended its work. “Now I hear the commission is going to submit report. They will split Grameen Bank into 19 pieces.” He vowed to resist conspiracy against Grameen Bank with support of the people of the country. - See more at: daily-sun/details_People-united-to-protect-Grameen-Bank:-Prof-Yunus_576_1_1_1_9.html#sthash.eUqusKyt.dpuf
