People who talk about Cuba only in terms of the lack of democracy - TopicsExpress

People who talk about Cuba only in terms of the lack of democracy are correct of course, but theyre only half correct: what about the complete failure of economic planning on that island - and the resulting squalor? I suspect the desire of many to stay away from this side of the debate has something to do with their clinging to the illusion that planning *could* work if only some mystical democratisation process took place and the resulting system were inoculated against bureaucratic calcification. The dish of fried snowballs, in other words: in the 1980s Soviet economists repeatedly pointed out that the problem of setting prices is insoluble. Ultimately, if you do want to see whats in front of your nose, as He put it, then you must see the failure of the economic side of these experiments for what it is - and move on. If not, then perhaps you dont *really* care about the people on whose behalf you agitate after all; your attachment is to *the idea* rather than the human being.
