People with vision loss or another significant disability are confronted with a 70 percent unemployment and underemployment rate, more than 10 times the national average. The National Industries for the Blind conducted a study that found more than half of hiring managers feel they don’t have a job in their company that could be done by a person who is blind. Another 45 percent feel it is too expensive to hire someone who is blind. But nearly any job can be performed by a person who is blind or visually impaired with just some minor accommodations. And, according to the American Foundation for the Blind, 88 percent of those accommodations cost less than $1,000. And imagine the perspective your employees gain when they work alongside a person experiencing vision loss. When you hire a qualified person who is blind or who has another disability, you provide an opportunity for them to become financially independent and to gain self-confidence.
