People you knew and associated with got hit close to you and you just kept going. James Huston, a retired Lynchburg College dean, landed in Normandy in July 1944. His infantry unit helped liberate French towns from the Germans and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, experiencing many casualties. His worst night came in the fall of 1944, during mortar fire along a river in France. The bridge had been blown up, and the Americans had to swim to the other side.
