Peoples Action Committee on 33rd day of indefinite satyagraha - TopicsExpress

Peoples Action Committee on 33rd day of indefinite satyagraha demanding CBI enquiry on Hakkim murder case of February 10th , 2014. In response to a call by the Peoples Action Committee and a similar call made later by the CPI(M)- led Karmma Samithi around the same demand, people of Payyanur municipality observed a day long hartal from 6am to 6pm today. Earlier in the morning , detention of five leaders of the PAC (N Subrahmanyan, Vinodkumar Kandankali, Athayi Balan, M Sudhakaran and Amarnath VK ) by the police while peacefully campaigning & seeking support for the hartal, was widely condemned as grave provocation on the side of the police. Following the unlawful arrest, the activists refused to be released on police bail and had started hunger strike while under police custody . The police, however responded through arbitrary actions like taking the arrested people unnecessarily to the JFM court of Thalassery only to be sent back to the Magistrate Court of Payyanur, to report the arrest. Purportedly the arrest was to be under Section 151 IPC .The latter, apparently seeing no valid reason for the detention & case , ordered to set them all free, and there ended a day-long drama played by the Payyanur police. T Purushothaman ,Dr D Surendranath, Lalu and others spoke in a public meeting held at the old bus stand. The meeting was attended by hundreds of people despite the fact that the meeting was organized in the end of a hartal day.
