Audi R8 4.2 V8 FSI 309Kw Audi R8 5.2 V10 FSI 386Kw Weve never seen a V12 version here in NZ before, but if you have one, well get the software module for that as well :) Historical overview and variations The Audi R8 (Typ 42) is a mid-engine, 2-seater sports car, which uses Audis trademark quattro permanent all-wheel drive system. It was introduced by the German automaker Audi AG in 2006. The car was exclusively designed, developed, and manufactured by Audi AGs high performance private subsidiary company, quattro GmbH, and is based on the Lamborghini Gallardo platform. The fundamental construction of the R8 is based on the Audi Space Frame, and uses an aluminium monocoque which is built using space frame principles. The car is built by quattro GmbH in a newly renovated factory at Audis aluminium site at Neckarsulm in Germany. In 2005, Audi announced that the name of the successful Audi R8 race car would be used for a new road car in 2007, the Audi R8, based on the Audi Le Mans quattro concept car, appearing at the 2003 International Geneva Motor Show, and 2003 Frankfurt International Motor Show. The R8 development program began in 2004, Lambertys design being approved and frozen for production. Production body prototypes began field testing in January 2006. The R8 road car was officially launched at the Paris Auto Show on 30 September 2006. There was some confusion with the name, which the car shares with the 24 Hours of Le Mans winning R8 Le Mans Prototype (LMP). 6-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx described the R8 as the best handling road car today. Audi Le Mans quattro (2003) Audi Le Mans quattro is a coupe with Jet Blue body colour, front curve of the front wings from Audi TT and Audi Nuvolari quattro GT, 20-inch wheels, V10 FSI engine with two turbochargers rated 610 PS (449 kW; 602 hp) and 750 N∑m (553.18 lb∑ft), single-frame radiator grille, aluminium sports suspension with magnetic ride shock absorbers, dark interior colours, vehicle body made of aluminium and carbon fibre, interior made of aluminium, rubber and leather. The vehicle was unveiled in 2003 IAA in Frankfurt. R8 CoupÈ 4.2 FSI quattro (2007 - present) The Audi R8 was initially equipped with a 4.2 litre V8 engine. Specifically, it is an all-aluminium alloy 32-valve petrol engine, utilising Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI), and has a displacement of 4,163 cubic centimetres (254.0 cu in). It develops a motive power output of 420 metric horsepower (309 kW; 414 bhp), and generates 430 newton metres (317 lbf∑ft) of torque, on 98 RON Super Unleaded petrol. It is basically the same engine used in the Audi B7 RS4, but is modified to use a dry sump lubrication system. This V8 is a highly reworked, high-revving variant of the existing 4.2 litre V8, but includes cylinder-direct fuel injection (Fuel Stratified Injection), and four valves per cylinder, instead of five. It also uses two chain-driven double overhead camshafts (DOHC) per cylinder bank, and utilises variable valve timing for both inlet and exhaust camshafts. The 4 wheel drive system is biased towards the rear; it sends 30% of its power to the front wheels and 70% to the rear. R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI quattro (2011 - present) On July 1, 2011 Autocar reported that Audi has added the 4.2 FSI V8 engine to the R8 Spyder range. The 434 PS (319 kW; 428 bhp), 430 newton metres (317 lbf∑ft) unit now completes the R8 Spyder range alongside the launch V10 powerplant. It has a 0-62 mph (0ñ100 km/h) time of 4.8sec and will go on to reach a top speed of 185 mph (299 km/h). The engine is available with Audis R tronic sequential manual gearbox. Like the V10 model, the V8 Spyder features an aluminium spaceframe with carbon composites and an automatic retractable folding cloth roof. R8 CoupÈ 5.2 FSI quattro (2008 - present) Audi AG unveiled the Audi R8 V10 on 9 December 2008. It uses a 5.2 litre FSI engine, based on the unit in the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4, but is re-tuned to produce a power output of 532 metric horsepower (391 kW; 525 bhp), and generate 530 newton metres (391 lbf∑ft) of torque. Compared to the V8 variant, the R8 V10s performance numbers are enhanced. Audi states the new 0 to 100 kilometres per hour (0.0 to 62.1 mph) time as only 3.9 seconds, 60 to 124 miles per hour (97 to 200 km/h) in 8.1 seconds, and a top speed of 316 kilometres per hour (196.4 mph). Other changes to the V10 version of the R8 include some aesthetic differences: such as all-LED headlights (a world-first), interior enhancements such as Bang & Olufsen 465 watt sound system, and a more aggressive body styling, larger rear brakes and different roadwheels. It was initially thought that this version of the R8 was going to have the same engine as the C6 Audi RS6, a 5.0 litre V10 TFSI twin-turbo engine, which produces 580 metric horsepower (427 kW; 572 bhp). However, some components of the twin-turbo system overheated, and one prototype was destroyed by fire at the N¸rburgring. This model was shown at the 2009 North American International Auto Show. R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro (2009 - present) Although it was rumoured by the automotive press since the announcement of the production R8 in 2006, it was only in August 2008 that spy shots of a convertible R8 Spider from filming scenes of the movie Iron Man 2 were published online. The photos showed a clearly visible soft-top roof, and the distinctive sideblade had been removed. The vehicle was formally unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Compared with the coupÈ model, the convertible will have extra chassis support, a pair of roll-over safety bars, as well as minor changes such as the location of the fuel filler. It will be powered by a 5.2 FSI V10 engine. German model launch began in first quarter of 2010, with sales started in the coming days. Audi R8 TDI Le Mans (2008) It is a version of Audi R8 V12 TDI concept with Brilliant Red body colour, rhombus-pattern cover on the air inlets and outlets, continuous aluminum spoiler lip, glass roof of the passenger compartment with two large transparent sections, glazed engine compartment behind seats, NACA duct in the middle of the roof, optional carbon fiber engine liner, LED headlights with color temperature of 6,000 Kelvin, 365 mm (14.37 in) three-spoke flat bottom diecast magnesium core sport steering wheel upholstered in Valcona leather, larger aluminum applications at around the center console, 24-piston brake calipers (red six-piston monobloc aluminum front calipers, fixed rear calipers), ventilated carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide ceramic brake discs. The vehicle was unveiled in 2008 Geneva Motor Show. The development of R8 TDI vehicles was cancelled, citing the cost of re-engineering the petrol R8 to accommodate the massive twin-turbocharged diesel engine is simply too great, and that it would be unable to recoup its investment through sales alone. R8 e-tron prototype (2011) Audi R8 e-tron prototype at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Audi originally announced the first e-tron model to be built by quattro GmbH at Neckarsulm, with a small production series beginning in late 2012. The R8 e-tron prototype was unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. The prototype is based on the R8 and follows closely the original concept, with a shape reminiscent of existing V8 and V10 petrol-powered versions. Audi claims the production version of the R8 e-tron will be capable of a 0ñ100 km/h (62 mph) time of around 4.8 seconds, making it only 0.2 seconds slower than the R8 V8. Initial plans call for its top speed to be limited to 124 mph (200 km/h) to protect the charge of the battery. It is planned for launch in early 2012. Along with the R8 e-tron, Audi is also considering small-scale production of a smaller and lighter zero-emission sportscar based on the second e-tron concept displayed at the 2010 Detroit Motor Show. R8 LMS ultra (2012 - present) It is a version of Audi R8 LMS with CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) doors with high-energy absorbing new crash foams, new PS1 safety seat developed by Audi, updated transmission provides additional reserves on long-distance runs, increased engine power to 570 PS (419 kW; 562 bhp) with higher torque at lower engine speeds, a larger engine oil cooler and transmission fluid cooler, relocated steering hydraulics oil cooler to the vehicles midsection, enlarged air vents, improved air flow to radiator and interior, front 12-inch wheels with Michelin 30-65/18 tires, optimized brake cooling at the front wheels, uniball joints transverse control arm mounts, weight-reduced compression and rebound-adjustable gas dampers from Bilstein, wider front hood with louvers, new wider rear wing with larger end plates, new front plate with optimized diffusion under the front end. Previous vehicles could be upgraded via an update kit. Audi R8 Tuning Audi R8 popularity forced the top European tuners to create different customization options for the car. Both interior and exterior design of the car could be changed in order to better the vision and make the car even more distinctive. Moreover packages to increase the overall performance are also available that enables the car to reach a maximum speed of around 40 km/h more than the non-tuning version. Also handling and braking are improved significantly. Most popular tuning packages are: Audi R8 Toxique Audi R8 Supersport Edition Audi R8 V10 Biturbo
