Personal reflections on visiting China and trekking part of the Great Wall... On returning from my trip friends and colleagues asked me what were the highlights and what were my impressions of todays China. At the time I had not fully assimilated the experience and could not give a considered view. Now over one year on here are my picks, in no particular order... 1.The breathtaking beauty of the more remote parts of the Wall. And, the sound of silence found there; no noise. 2.The air pollution in the cities I visited and the drabness of many of the apartment blocks. 3.The sheer size and scale of the Forbidden City, Beijing 4.The beauty and tranquility of The Summer Palace, Beijing 5.My horror at Chinese health and safety, or the lack of 6.Making sense of many of the Mandarin to English translations 7.The contrast of old and new styles of architecture evident in Beijing and Xian. 8.The magnificence of the Birds Nest stadium and Olympic Park 9.The traditional skills seen sadly many of these skills are rapidly disappearing as China modernises. 10. Xians Muslim quarter as I would imagine the Chinese cities of yesteryear were like. 11. I have 11 and not 10 because I could not miss out the awe inspiring Terracotta Warriors For more impressions and recollections and photos of my visit read my ebook Scaling The Dragons Back available on Kindle from Amazon, Barnes & Noble for Nook and for all other formats from theendlessbookcase.
