Personal story....Your FB campus Eclectic Radio DJ leaves you tonight with a Sondheim song that I happen to love, sung here by Patti Lupone. As per my usual with these music posts, I will tell a little tale about how I met the musician. In the case of Ms. Lapone it was in quite an odd circumstance: I was hired by one of the producers to read with all the actresses auditioning for the leading role of Lady Bird Johnson in a mini series about the rise of LBJ. The producer thought the actresses would do better auditioning with a fellow actor rather than trying to get something going with a casting person ~ most of whom really arent actors (forgive me, casting people, if you ARE ~ youre the exception). All actors know what it feels like tossing the proverbial ball to someone who just doesnt know how to toss it back. Well...twice in my life an actress about to go on stage has nearly broken my hand, she was squeezing it so hard ~ out of nervousness. This was one of those sweaty times. I remember being surprised because Ms. Lupone really is a great performer. Im always surprised when great performers are nervous as I wrote in my article about Jimi Hendrix. This is my naivete; I know that now. In any case, surprised or not, I just KNEW that of all the actresses auditioning, even though she was a stage actress and not known in Film, Ms. Lupone was going to get that role. I told her as much back stage before we went on for her screen test. I told her, Ive been reading with everyone, you know...and I can tell you... I know this with every fibre of my being: YOU are it, Patti. Youre about to get this part. Youre going to play Lady Bird, on camera, across from Randy Quaid, whos the most perfect actor in the world for LBJ. Hes going to be brilliant ~ and so are you.Just amazing. She took a deep breath and I remember the look that came into her eyes though she may have forgotten this entire experience. It was relief. A sheet of anxiety just left her. Drained off into the floor. Really? she said, You think so? I KNOW so. I FEEL it. Thankfully, she did get the part. I was really happy for her because I could see how much she wanted it. And I was ALSO really happy for me ~ ! ~ that my gut feelings had proved to be right! I was, it seems in retrospect, destined to build a Life Work on my gut feelings (mimisetonpsychic) so I have always been keen to see if they are accurate. In this case, they certainly were. She got that part ~ and she was amazing in it. Then again, it doesnt take a psychic to know that Patti Lupone will be great in pretty much ANY role! https://youtube/watch?v=OmM-5VAzrNw
