Personally - Id rather see more effort and money put in to mental health programs, but: As with guns, the person wielding each of those objects (cars, pencils and spoons) is ultimately responsible for the damage each of them can produce. The likelihood of a pencil actually physically wounding or killing another individual is pretty slim (yes - its been known to happen, but for the millions of pencils that are thrown each year, the injuries are statistically very minor) - in the case of a car, the odds increase, but we know that in the case of each of those objects, used responsibly and as intended, they will do no damage - with a gun, there is only one thing it was made to do - and if the operator points it and pulls the trigger, the odds are pretty high that the object its pointed at is going to suffer serious damage. So, the person wielding the gun is ultimately responsible for the number of lives he or she destroys with that gun - which is why the folks advocating for gun control keep asking for background checks and waiting periods. Even if we cant get rid of the rocket launchers and the AK-whatevers, or grenades - we can at least work on ensuring that the serious nutjobs dont get their hands on them.
