Perspective: March 12, 2014 at 12:05 am (Quote) Can’t help but feel that something sinister is going on: tell our kids that a degree is not important or does not guarantee jobs and success in life, and yet they are giving scholarships and university places to foreign students and sending their own kids overseas for a college or university education. Local parents have to fork out thousands of dollars to send their kids to private universities because they are denied places at our public unis while foreigners get free rides. Our boys are not allowed NS deferment for further studies, but they allow foreigners deferment from serving out their bonds until completion of PhD. Previously, in order to get a deferment for overseas studies, parents have to put down a $75,000 bond to guarantee their return to serve NS, but this is not required of foreign scholars who defer their bond commitment. Our boys are set back by 2 years of NS and suffer economic hardship while foreign students on scholarships graduate with jobs waiting for them. How can all these disparities benefit Singaporeans?
