Perspectives for 21 July Take pride of being democratic generation Now we are in more than the two and a half democratic transition from the half a century of military-rule. The country has been introduced to sweeping reforms by the elected new government. Now, the country is on the right track to a genuine democracy for peace and prosperity, catching global attention, not regional only. Resurrection of a new political culture in the wake of ending the blame game led to a paradigm shift in Myanmar’s political landscape. It encouraged all-inclusiveness and peaceful co-existence. Withdrawal of media censorship and restriction on the Internet, release of political prisoners and successful ceasefire agreements with non-state armed groups and ongoing measures to end years of internecine conflicts were tangible. As result, the country regained international recognition and all economic sanctions were lifted. It means a place that Myanmar deserves returned to her. International community admitted Myanmar’s bold move to democracy was found exciting and amazing. Turning a page of the second half of the office, the government is making great strides in realization of nationwide ceasefire to silence the guns and to bring a lasting peace to the nation for the first time in more than sixty years. Moreover, the country sees a foreign investment law that invites responsible trade and investments to ensure national economic development and job creation for the youths to be able grab same opportunities as their peers in other Asian countries. But, our young democracy is being tested by invisible factors that can plunge the nation to a state of backsliding for our good reputation for tolerance towards difference in religion. Healthy skepticism and negotiation culture are desperately needed in the country. On our long road to democracy, it is a must to brace ourselves against malicious rumors and instigators of the disturbances and to be mindful that only harmonious pluralism could bring an atmosphere of community peace and tranquility. Now is the time to put all differences aside and to take pride of being a democratic generation while advancing to pluralistic democracy.
