‘Perspectives’ highlights English communication skills By Samantha Isabelle H. Bagayas To better equip English majors with the basics of teaching communication skills—writing, reading, listening and speaking—the XU School of Education Literary and Communication Society (XU-SELICS) and Xavier English Language and Literature Organization (XELLO), along with CSG Department of Academic and Co-curricular Affairs (DACA), organized an English language-teaching seminar, August 16, at the Commerce building. “Perspectives: Trends and Approaches in English Language Teaching,” was geared toward English majors and language tutors from the Supplementary Training to Reinforce Education of the Academically gifted but Marginalized Students (STREAMS). It focused on the importance of properly relaying the four macro skills in a classroom setting. With teachers from the English department as speakers, the seminar was split into four parts to highlight each skill’s contribution in understanding the English language. This includes teaching grammar and vocabulary, understanding English language through literature, reading, writing; and teaching listening and speaking. Maricar Martinez, president of XU-SELICS, stressed the need of English majors--especially those who aspire to become teachers--to understand how to translate their knowledge of the language through the four macro skills. “Lisod man gyud kaayo mag-teach or mag-master ug isa ka skill without being grounded itself sa skills. Ikaw [as] teacher mag-teach ka ug writing then you yourself dili kabalo mag write, so lisod kaayo siya. Kailangan na-master nimo ang skills sa reading, sa listening kay you cannot teach what you do not know,” she said. She added that while English majors under the School of Education learn the basics of teaching the English language, the seminar aimed to give a fresh perspective on education. “Ang difference sa amoa sa AB English is, sa SOE, ginatudluan mi kung unsaon pag-teach sa language, may it be reading [or] writing … That is why ang mission man pud gyud sa SELICS kay to help develop the education of these students. We see na naka-allign siya sa among mission to help develop the education of English majors. So I think that would be the very reason why we intended to have this seminar.”
