Perth suburb gets behind solar with mandated on-site solar for all new-build homes and major renovations Unlike the Federal Government with its currently shaky stance on solar, the City of Nedlands in Perth, Western Australia has proven itself fully committed to solar power. Recently mandating on-site solar for all new build homes and major renovations, they’re ensuring their city’s future will be solar powered. The new law Under new legislation, Nedlands residents building new homes or carrying out substantial additions to existing developments will be required to: ”provide on-site power generation by solar, wind or other means.” For new builds, this means installing a rooftop solar or other energy system with a minimum capacity of 1.5kW. Non-residential (commercial) developments with a value exceeding $1 million will be required to include additional on-site energy. The capacity of which will be determined by the Council, based on roof area and height. A close vote Passed by a close majority of six votes to five, the decision’s not been without controversy. Reportedly in opposition to the move, Cr. Ian Argyle argued the decision to install solar should be left to residents, and not mandated by the Government. However, Mayor Hipkins argued that for the wealthy landowners of the suburb, the cost is on par with what the average homeowner would spend on a dining room table. The decision, he says, is an opportunity for landowners to “show leadership” by embracing renewable energy. A positive move to the future As the Federal Government considers whether or not to scrap the solar rebate scheme and reduce solar rebates, this move is proof at least some local Governments are committed to renewable energy.
