Pet Peeve of The Day: 9-10-14 (havent done one of these for awhile) For Profit Colleges and the Idiots that go to them: Let me start off by reiterating what I said in the title of todays pet peeve; If you choose to attend a for-profit college instead of a real one then you are an idiot and a prime of example of the famous saying, Theres a sucker born every minute. As this video explains and a little research (thats something real college students are required to do) will tell you; the cost of these schools is outrageous. The cost of tuition is five times or more higher than a community college and at a minimum at least twice as high as the tuition at four year state colleges. For what? The accreditation for these colleges is usually only regional which means that if you go to school at Full Sail University in Florida (I personally checked this one out) the degree you get is only meaningful in Florida. No place else in the world has to acknowledge that you even have a degree. For that wonderful degree the median cost of a bachelors degree is just over $65,000 in just tuition and fees. I attend Humboldt State University in northern California and you want to know what a bachelors degree will cost me in just tuition and fees; just over $25,000. That is a savings of $40,000 for a Bachelors degree and that degree will be accepted anywhere in the US and in most places in the world. The quality of education is better as well. Lets use an example from the video. There is three students who studied nursing to get their associates level nursing degree and they said they never stepped foot in a hospital as a nursing student. My wife is currently going for the same level of nursing degree and she spends a minimum of 16 hours a week in the hospital as a student nurse. Hmmmm? Which would you rather have helping you next time you go to the hospital for something? Now I will be the first to admit that the colleges and universities here in CA have their issues and the same is probably true elsewhere. But they are still good schools and their degrees are widely accepted as proof that the person with one knows what they are talking about. At least to a certain extent. :) Please; dont go to for-profit colleges. Go to a community college (like my wife is for her degree) or to a state college (like I am for my degree). You will get a better education for a significantly lower cost. Will you still be in debt when you leave college? Maybe. But it will not be as bad as it would be if you got sucked in by one of those smooth talking snake oil salesman that pass for recruiters for the for-profit colleges. if you get a chance watch the video. Its about 15 minutes long but it is (IMO) pretty funny even though it is dealing with a very tough issue. -Steve- slate/blogs/browbeat/2014/09/08/john_oliver_student_debt_segments_goes_after_for_profit_colleges_video.html?wpsrc=sh_all_dt_tw_top
