Pet peeve: Someone PLEASE show me WHERE in the written breed standard (and Ill take *any official* breed standard...ACC/AKC/CKC/FCI/any legitimate kennel club) is the color of a Chesapeake described as CHOCOLATE?!? Chocolate is for candy bars, milk, and cakes. Chocolate is NOT for any self respecting Chesapeake!!! And while Im at it... SAGE is a plant and a lovely shade of silvery green. SAGE is NOT one of the three colors of Chesapeakes. SEDGE. SEDGE is the color used to describe the reddish colored Chesapeakes. DEADGRASS-yep! That would be the color used for Chesapeakes that are yellow colored. ASH- this one is tricky as some wish the color would just go away, but it is in the breed, so I might as well mention it. You can call it ASH, you can call it LIGHT BROWN, you can even call it DEADGRASS, but what you can NOT call it is SILVER! Within those colors we do have some anomalies that happen... BRINDLE- the stripey pattern sometimes found on (typically) deadgrass colored Chessies. MASKED- the generally lighter mask found around the eyes of ANY colored Chesapeake. HOUND MARKINGS- a throwback to the foundation dogs...the pattern looks like that found on Dobes. MISMARKED WHITE- yes people! White markings ARE acceptable in the breed! Excessive white is a disqualification in the show ring, but white on the chest and tips of toes is permissible! There are other color anomalies such as agouti, but Im not going to get to technical when all I would like to see is the word BROWN used for dogs that are BROWN in color! OK, jumping off my soapbox now. Sorry for the rant, its just if you wanted a CHOCOLATE dog, then you should have gotten one of those other retrievers!
