Peter Connolly a current placement student started his placement - TopicsExpress

Peter Connolly a current placement student started his placement year with an unpaid placement and he found it more beneficial financially than a paid placement, here is what he had to say: "Travel is worth taking into consideration when you’re comparing paid and unpaid placements. Taking a paid placement, but further away, could mean that you’re taking home less money in the long run. For example; • My partner earned £100 a week and spent £15 a week on travel • She took home £85 per week • I earned £150 a week, but spent £64 on travel per week, if not more • I took home £86 per week We were both taking home practically the same amount per week, even though one was on a paid placement and the other was on unpaid. Before discarding the thought of taking an unpaid placement in favour of a paid placement, consider whether or not there are grants or allowances for the unpaid placement, also, consider the distance; when you include travel costs etc. It might actually be more financially viable to take the unpaid placement, if it’s easier to get to. Most importantly, consider the experience you want gain from your placement. Paid or unpaid, you need to gain valuable experience from this year."
