Peter Hetherington wrote a rather supercilious piece about the debate between Nicola Sturgeon and Johann Lamont for the 11 March Guardian. I offer(ed) this reply: I suspect that Mr. Hetherington did not see the same debate as the rest of the country. For him to suggest that Johann Lamont offered anything other than the usual platitudes trotted out by the NO campaign – and it IS a campaign – simply beggars belief. Indeed, Lamont’s performance reminded me very much of the old Monty Python skit in which John Cleese goes into a shop to argue and leaves frustrated. Like Eric Idle, Lamont spent her time gainsaying whatever Ms. Sturgeon offered and without offering the slightest vision for Scotland herself. But that’s likely because she has nothing TO offer. Lamont, “Labour,” the Liberal Democrats and most assuredly Cameron and his Tory cronies have other no vision whatsoever, counting on a campaign of fear and the now-occupied Vladimir Putin to swing votes to NO in September. Instead, the lot of them, not the least Lamont, would rather that wee, poor, genetically-challenged Scotland continue to shuffle, eyes downcast, bowl in hand to Cameron and the millionaire Parliament, begging, “Please Ma’am and Sirs, may we have some more?” Ms. Sturgeon, the First Minister and the YES campaign DO have something on offer: dignity and Independence. Lamont and her lot cannot and will not do the same. I’d choose independence; I’d choose dignity. And so will all true Scots. Mr. Hetherington? I fear I know your answer already.
