Peter wishes for everyone to have a first-hand encounter with Jesus; to know him for who he really is, and not just as a vague, distant, historic figure. He writes that he was not relating cleverly devised myths, but was an eyewitness of the majesty of Jesus. We can argue, Well that is great for Peter; he was one of the lucky ones to be an eyewitness. What about us? This is exactly what prompted Peter to write this letter. We know beyond any doubt that he Messiah is no longer a future promise, but a fulfilled reality. Now it is your turn to have more than a second-hand, hearsay testimony. Take my word as one would take a lamp at night; the day is about to dawn for you in your own understanding.
