Petition to Mandela Dear Madiba, My sincere apologies for disturbing you with mere canal issues at this point of your possible glorious transition to the great beyond. My thoughts and that of several ordinary Nigerians, who truly admire and adore you, are with you at this point, praying that the good Lord should further preserve your very outstanding life. But since all men must taste death, we are willing to submit to the will of the Almighty. The purpose of writing you Sir, is to send a petition to God through you, if God is indeed ready to call you to His bosom, on the very precarious state of our country, Nigeria. As a well known fact Madiba, Nigeria is the most populous black nation in the world and arguably the most endowed nation in the Africa, if not in the whole world. The destiny of Nigeria and that of the rest of Africa is interwoven, just as Nigeria and your country, South Africa; share strong bilateral, cultural and economic ties that make them exist as Siamese twins on the continent. Madiba Sir, Your love for the rest of Africa and Nigeria knows no limit. No wonder, you refused to keep quiet in the face of tyranny, when that dangerous demagogue called Abacha turned Nigeria to a jungle, brutalizing his people and tormenting the rest of world with jungle and barbaric diplomacy. Some of us are of the opinion that apart from your almost three decades of incarceration, one of the major things that must have weighed down on your spirit is the inability of your beloved Nigeria to rise up to the challenge of leading the black world out of the wilderness of extreme poverty, debilitating corruption and wicked leadership. President Mandela, these ugly circumstances remain prevalent in Nigeria, a country you love wholeheartedly, till today, in spite of the country’s pretence to democracy. It is on record Sir that Nigeria remains home to the highest number of people living in extreme poverty. Mr. President, as you are aware, Nigeria is the biggest producer of crude oil in Africa. As you may also know, virtually every natural endowment required for economic growth and development, are deposited by God in the Nigerian territory in commercial quantity. Yet, millions, indeed, almost a hundred million Nigerians, wallow in abject poverty. I will spare you details of recent statistics on Nigerian health records so that I don’t provoke an arrest of your cardiac system. But Sir is it not unbelievable that life expectancy in Nigeria, the first country in Africa to have a television system, has dropped to below 47 years? Madiba, this is a petition to you Sir, to help us table our grievances before God, whenever he chooses to finally call you home. Our over fourteen years of civil rule has been corruption ridden, with income inequality widening by the day. Our leaders get richer by the day, living larger than life. This accounts for the stunted growth recorded in every sector of our economy. Madiba, please help us inform the creator: in Nigeria, over USD25b has been expended on power sector reforms in the last 14 years or so with no real improvement in power supply across in the country. Power generation and supply still hover around 3,000 megawatts of electricity for over 160million people. I’m sure Your Excellency will waggle on your sick bed at this moment. I can hear you murmuring: How irresponsible can any leadership be! Heathrow Airport in Britain generates more than that daily, same for some big industries and higher institutions across the world. Don’t be surprised Sir, our leaders have decided to be agents of darkness. Madiba, I want to avoid tales that can make your condition get worse and accelerate your departure to the great beyond. But one thing I cannot but bring to your knowledge is the desperation of our leaders, especially the ruling party, the PDP, to destroy the electoral system ahead of the next general elections. As we talk now Madiba, 35 state Governors gathered and elected two people for the same post. Nigeria has never been this divided. When the good Lord finally calls you, please make passionate plea on our behalf - that God, in His great power, should rescue Nigeria. Please, also help us to make supplication for an end to Boko-Haram insurgencies in Nigeria. Finally Madiba, once you depart this sinful world, Nigerian leaders of different categories, who hold high revulsion for your core principles – of equality and fairness – will begin to issue different statements to praise you. They will struggle to be part of the entourage to your rites of passage. How I wish you have the presence of mind now to issue a statement forbidding these megalomaniacs from participating in your funeral. I know this is almost impossible. But wherever you are Sir, make sure thunder strikes any greedy Nigerian leader from making faking eulogy at your funeral because such can only desecrate your gentle spirit. Madiba, you have played your part. You are a leader of leaders. You will remain an icon of service and selflessness in our hearts.
