Petone Stadium Continued Hutt City Council voted to proceed but..... there is a strong emphasis on public consultation and a strong requirement by the community trust and council officers to get a whole mountain of accurate detail. To date the proposal data was so light weight it could float away and content was wild speculation. The community is still very sceptical, with real cause, that this proposal is being driven almost entirely by the Phoenix/Gareth Morgan. And is esentially a commercial proposition which will to a large degree remove free public access to the park space in a suburb where green areas are not that abundant. With a regional hat on my position hasnt changed and we first need to get all amalgamation issues finalised, then look at a wide regional facilities need and then see if the plan works. Again in my opinion we need a 12,000 seat INDOOR multi-purpose arena, ideal situated on the log farm area on Wellingtons foreshore before any more $$$$ are spent. Petone would still be a second choice for a location (covered) but not in the Rec Park currently under discussion. A short term solution to Mr. Morgans issues is that he first learns about the bums on seats industry which he clearly doesnt fathom at all. Then make peace with the Westpac Stadium and get a workable deal. Then get the Phoenix to win more and play better as this would easily resolve his numbers problems. His current course is a downward, uninspiring format that will see football move backward in its popularity.
