Petroleum companies really should be investing large sums of money in renewable energy. That revolution is going to happen and they owe it to their shareholders. Many tech companies have the strategy of self cannibalizing. Meaning they innovate a product that replaces, their current product offering thus eating their own revenues. Its easier to do when your product cycle is no more than 3 years, but just because energy product cycles are over 100 years, this doesnt mean the firms should abandon the strategy of self cannibalizing. In fact they must do it or face death.
