PhD student’s health promotion research gains an award from a major company in China. Betsy Lai - Supervised by Prof Amanda Griffiths (School of Medicine) and Dr Holly Blake (School of Health Sciences) An experiment with workers in Guangzhou and Beijing, China, has achieved an award. Betsy Lai has developed a workplace exercise programme - “Move It” 动起来 – that encourages IT workers to get up from their desks and take short, guided exercise breaks during working time. The award is as a result of an internal competition, granted for organisational activity that confers benefit to the company and has wide acceptance among employees. The exercises include simple stretching and a simple form of Tai Chi called Qigong. The programme is valued by managers. Betsy is evaluating its effects on individual health and work performance. The participating organisation is an IT company, a subsidiary of the largest publicly listed pan-Asian life insurance group. The group has operations in 14 markets in the Asia Pacific, including Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, China and Korea. Betsy is studying for a PhD in Occupational Health: Psychology and Management, supervised by Professor Amanda Griffiths in the Division of Psychiatry and Applied Psychology, School of Medicine, and Dr Holly Blake in the School of Health Sciences.
