Phil Yerington The last criminal street gang that I studied as a member of the Davenport Police Department was the Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13. The gang originated in El Salvador in the 1980s and have been the target of FBI, DEA, and ATF investigations. They have been called the most violent street gang in the Americas, and are notorious murderers, drug dealers, and gun runners. There has been MS-13 graffiti located in Davenport, and kids have been found with MS-13 tattoos. These are probably from young wannabes, but those easily influenced young men were all it took for the investation of violent Chicago street gangs in the 1980s and 90s. Now the mayor is offering to open our doors to them. They recruit boys as young as 7 or 8 years old, and have been documented as crossing the border with the children coming in now. And have also been actively recruiting minors in US shelters. Davenport worked hard to reduce its gang problem. Perhaps the mayor should do some research before he offers our town to potential violent gang members.
