Philadelphians,... we occupy the land that was once the rivers, - TopicsExpress

Philadelphians,... we occupy the land that was once the rivers, the woodlands, the villages, the fields, the tribal turf - the homeland of the Lenape Indians. This weekend, I spent the better part of a day at a Lenape Indian Tribal Drum Circle Ceremony; a ritual of the indigenous peoples of the land we now occupy. What we now know as Passyunk Ave was at one time an actual native peoples route to the trading harbor on the Delaware (hence the sidewalk decals that now dot it). Having had lived in the Pacific NW where native culture is ever more present, preserved and celebrated, I am humbled and most respectful of having had been at this event. The numbers are fewer, the daily culture more distant, the lineage more fractional; yet the pride, the longing, and the reverence to the native ways and life are vibrant and palpable. I am deeply and respectfully moved . (One need not board a plane to experience another culture.) In Lenape: See (Voir) Nemën. Hear (Entendre) Pëntamën. Sing (Chanter) Naxkohoman. Fond and grateful.
