Philip Rivers: I didn’t say anything out of line when yelling at the refs by Michael David Smith Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers got a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct after screaming at the officials during Sunday’s game against the Titans, but afterward Rivers said he didn’t use any bad words. Although Rivers acknowledged that he wishes he would have stopped talking before drawing a penalty flag, he said he thinks the officials threw the flag just because he threw up his hands in frustration, and not because of anything he said. “I didn’t say one thing that was out of line. Again, that’s no excuse. I’m certainly not proud of getting a penalty,” Rivers said, via AL. Rivers was yelling at the officials because they made an offensive pass interference call that negated a touchdown pass, but he admitted after the game that he doesn’t know if it was a bad call. “I’ve not seen the replay,” Rivers said. “I’m not sure if it was the right call or not. Obviously that’s what I was so upset about. It was a big play. It was a big play in the game. It was a touchdown and it gets called back.” I have seen the replay, and I’ll tell Rivers: It was a good call. And the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty the officials gave Rivers was also a good call, as Rivers got in the officials’ faces and refused to back off even after he was told to step away. Whether Rivers said anything that was “out of line” or not, when the officials have made their call and are telling you to get back to your huddle, you need to get back to your huddle. Rivers wouldn’t listen, and he cost his team 15 yards.
