In the years before martial law in 1972, there were two political parties which seemed on the way to gaining acceptance — the nationalistic and conservative Nacionalista Party (NP) and the more activist , more liberal, more open Liberal Party (LP). But, like the other political institutions of the country, they were set aside in the ensuing years.
