Philosophy to ponder.... Imagine this scenario: You enter a studio space and dont want your hard earned money to go to the studio owner. Perhaps you would spend the same ammount going down the street to eat a sandwich, but you are philosophically opposed to paying for studio space. But the owner says that money is needed to pay the rent at the lovely little mall where the studio is located. You feel for her. Oh. It is so terrible that your landlord takes all the money. She tells the landlord you cant pay the rent because there are not enough people wanting to pay for studio space. Suddenly the landlord cant afford food for the chickens and ducks, the flowers die because the gardener isnt paid, so his family goes hungry, and work on the stop light that the mall owner is paying a portion of has to be halted so in the future, cars leaving the mall get in accidents and fall in ditches. Finally the mall goes bust and a non descript office park goes up. And someone laments the lack of heart and soul in the face of big business, not realizing that the heart and soul is shared by everyone. Instead, one can look at it another way. When you pay for a class, you support your teacher who has paid dearly to aquire her knowledge. When your teacher pays for studio space- or even if you pay some rent for space so you can practice or take a private lesson yourself, it keeps a sacred space for dance and creativity alive. The studio can pass the joy on to the mall owner so she can feed the ducks, flowers, and continue funding a stop light that will save lives. Ten years from now, there will be more beauty, light, dance, flowers, and prosperity because every step of the way, people support one another and understand that the efforts of each person are valuable and important; that the students, teachers, business owners, landlords and even the city are working together toward a common goal. No one is taking from one another. We are all keeping the flow going, keeping the cash moving where it needs to go (usually not ending up making anyone richer than the next person). This is the open- prosperity mentality as opposed to the poverty mentality where things stagnate and eventually end because of holding on, holding back and thinking mine.
